About
Nasfund is one of Papua New Guinea’s largest superannuation funds. They play a dual role—managing retirement savings for workers across the country while also educating members on the importance of long-term financial planning. In PNG, where financial literacy around superannuation is still developing, this education piece is especially critical.
The Challenge
In Papua New Guinea, it’s common for people to withdraw their entire superannuation balance as a lump sum at retirement. Nasfund wanted to shift this behaviour by helping members understand the value of their super and the impact of contributing more over time.
The brief was to design a tool that helps users understand the value of making super contributions early in life, while also highlighting the importance of considering their future living expenses and the impact of inflation.
My Solution
I designed a step-by-step calculator that makes superannuation planning clear, approachable, and actionable. Using a conversational UI, it guides users through inputs like age, salary, and balance with tooltips and helper text to reduce friction. Users can model one-off contributions at any age and see the impact instantly.
The tool also projects beyond retirement to help users understand sustainable drawdown and the long-term role of super as income. A dynamic graph highlights key figures, while users can save or print a summary or book an appointment with Nasfund, with their data carried through to streamline the process.
Services
UX, UI
The conversational UI makes it as easy as possible for users to get started. It immediately displays their super balance, along with a message and button encouraging further exploration.
At the next step, the user is shown a detailed graph illustrating how their super balance changes over time, including how it decreases after they stop earning income. Tooltips prompt the user to provide additional details about their living expenses if they wish.
A constant element in the UI is the Retirement Readiness box, which gives users a clear understanding of how financially secure they’re likely to be in retirement.
Users can adjust their contributions and add one-off voluntary contributions to see how these changes affect the graph and their retirement readiness.
Users can also input their living expenses, which are displayed in the summary box and plotted on the graph to show how they increase with inflation.
